Local Food Challenge

Over the years, Blake and I have worked our way more and more toward a more self-sustaining, local business supporting lifestyle.

A huge part of that is what we eat. When Liz posted about joining the August Eat Local Challenge, I knew it was something that I wanted to do.

I am hoping it will help us make more progress on what we are already doing….supporting local agriculture and small businesses whenever possible. There are certainly some things we are lazy about, so this may be just the kick in the pants we need to finally improve ;)

Now to outline how we’re going to go about it:

1. What’s your definition of local for this challenge?

I think we’ll go with the 100 mile radius. This includes a lot of rural land, but also Portland, so we should have plenty of options.

2. What exemptions will you claim?

Coffee….Blake just loves his crappy instant coffee, so I doubt we will be replacing that. I would say things like spices and salt, but I don’t think purchasing those will come up as an issue during the month. I am certain once we are doing this I will have more to say here.

3. What is your personal goal for the month?

To first try and obtain as much as possible through growing/making it ourselves (small organic veggie garden, eggs, kefir) and buying from local farmers through farmer’s markets and my favorite local fruit/veggie stand. If it cannot be fully produced locally, I will either buy organic, or support a small business.

We will attempt to go all the way, and do all meals, concentrating most heavily on dinner.

I’m really looking forward to this exercise, and I hope others will join us!
